The movement is preparing to tackle both offense and defense. A central strategy involves supporting white people in organizing their own communities. White moral injury, a concept introduced by Chenequa Walker Barnes, is a crucial topic that requires deep reflection and engagement within white communities. This process is essential for dismantling toxic theologies and the weight that so easily besets racial justice work and progress.

Micheal Gilliland

Michael Gilliland is the Organizing Director for CALEB, an institutional coalition of faith communities, labor unions, nonprofits and community leaders working together to build power to affect change in Chattanooga and across Tennessee. He is also a co-founder of the People’s History of Chattanooga Project that uses tours, talks and other events to highlight the city’s rich history of social movements and activism.

Rev. Anne Dunlap

Rev. Anne Dunlap is a pastor, organizer, teacher, ritualist, and herbalist. She is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ (UCC) — serving as Community Minister for Racial Justice and Solidarity, also known as “the fierce good reverend of the revolution,” a title given by friends in the freedom movement and held with humility. From 2015 to 2023, she served as the Faith Organizer for Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) and coordinated the podcast The Word Is Resistance. She is a Consultant Partner with Jewish Bridge Project and a co-founder of the Liberating Lineages Collective, which focuses on congregational community safety practices and organizing white Christians for racial and economic justice.

Rev. Anne started FierceRev Remedies in 2016 when she graduated as a community herbalist. This space is a natural outgrowth of her herbal studies and the spiritual and emotional care she provides folks in justice-seeking movements.

She has been an activist/organizer over 35 years, a pastor for 15, and an herbalist for over 12. She has seen and experienced how the daily grind of systemic oppression takes its toll on body and spirit, and how the struggle for collective liberation can both invigorate us and break our hearts.
